Har Ki Dun means Valley of Gods is one of the most fameous trek in the Garhwal region ofUttarakhand at a height of 3556 metres. Har Ki Doon is a hanging valley famed for exquisitebeauty and is rich in flora and fauna, a series of quaint villages on the cliffs, the delightful experience of camping by a sprightly mountain river, and vista of snow peaks.

 

Har Ki dun is a moderate trek which takes you to the one of the least explored places in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand and best suitable for first time trekkers in Himalayas and also who are experienced in other parts of Himalayas. Sankri serves as the base for Har Ki Dun Trek which is common to other treks like Kedarkantha trek, Ruinsara Lake Trek etc.

 

One thing differ this trek from other is that you can trek here on summer and winter both and its beauty will amaze you in each winter. It will take you through most charismatic alpine meadows, Pine forest and Glaciers which is a treat to the eyes. Some believe that it is the same route taken by the Pandavas in Mahabharata to ascent heaven. The Har Ki Dun trek will take you through some of the most ancient villages that are approx. 2000 years old. This trek is perfect for adventure seeker and nature lover. You can even spot various species of bird and capture pics for lifetime memories. Motivate an opportunity to observe the different types of flying creatures and warm blooded animals that flourish in this locale.

 

The total distance is  44 kms.

 

Difficulty Level
One who has an experience of trekking can do it quite easy and it isn’t even hard for the first timers but can get little tiring while trekking, though anybody with a decent fitness can trek to Har ki dun and this could be the most magnificent and incredible journey for the trekkers.

Is it suitable for children’s? Yes, the trek is favorable for children’s up to 5 years of age but there are certain additional logistical support that we recommend for children’s.

Is it a good option for the first time trekkers /or families? Yes, we recommend for those who have a less or no prior experience in trekking , this trek does not have tricky patches, and a well planned itinerary will not making it tiring and uncomfortable for you to trek.


The best season to do this trek is from March-June and August-January.

Day 1
Arrive at Sankri (6,450 ft).
  • Arrive Sankri which is around 8-9 hours drive from Dehradun. The drive to Sankri takes you through Mussoorie, Purola, Mori, Netwar alongside the Yamuna and Tons River. The drive also passes by beautiful pine forests. Overnight stay in guesthouse in Sankri.
Day 2
Sankri (2,000m) – Taluka(12 Kms by road)- Trek to Osla(2860m)(14Kms,5-7Hrs)
  • After breakfast in Sankri, we will drive from Sankri to Taluka in a taxi. Taluka is the starting point of the trek. The trek distance is around 15 kms and will take around 5-7 hrs. Today, you will trek through the lush green valley covered with wild orchids of Himalayas. The trail from Taluka village initially descends and then continues gradually on the true left of the valley adjoining the river Rupin.Later the trail goes through thick forests of chestnuts, walnuts, willows, chinars and a variety of conifer trees, with a few waterfalls on the way and by late afternoon reach Osla village. Osla village is fameous for its exceptional architecture and the most striking structure being the Durtodhana temple topped with a pair of carved peacocks. Overnight stay in camps at OSla village.
Day 3
Trek from Osla- Kalkatiyadhaar(2900m).(7Kms,4-5Hrs)
  • After breakfast, you will start yourv trek yo Kalkatiyadhaar. After Hiking for an hour you will enter in a series of cleared land. The Climb is large after it however beautiful landscape makes up for the efforts, You will soon reach flat land, which is your next Campsite, Kalkatiyadhaar., the trail passes through 3 garaat or hydroelectricity run teasing units which are utilized by the villagers for isolating husks of millet and maize pursued by establishing to flour. The unspoiled vibe held in the encompassing, the trek continues through gather lands, dairy cattle eating, and inclination roofed cabins utilized as silo and stockpiles. Day 4
Trek from Kalkatiyadhaar to Harki Dun and return. Har Ki Dun exploration (Jaundhar Glacier or Morinda tal)
  • After breakfast, start your trek to explore Har Ki dun valley which is 4 knms from Kalkatiyadhaar. After the start of the trek , On your right, you come across the pastures of Dev Thach, just where the two rivers meet. From this point, the valley bifurcates into two with Bali pass on the right and Hark ki Doon to your left. On your way to the camping site, you could now have a glance at the peak of Har ki Doon. The grasslands and pine forests would give way to a small waterfall, and from this point onwards, a steep climbing for minutes would lead you to a level land, with patches of snow becoming more and more prominent all along your path. Some more climbing would take you to a forest stretch with a gradual incline. Along the way, you’ll find some forest guest house huts just above a small ridge. Once you reach Har ki Doon after crossing a wooden bridge, you’d see the valley dividing into two by a rivulet. The one to the left would lead you to Jaundar Glacier, in case you decide to undertake this arduous trek. On your way, the scenic beauty of the Himalayas will keep charging you for this literally uphill task. This would include the proximate views of Swargarohini peaks and Jaundar Glacier. Explore Har ki Dun for an hour depends upon time you are reaching there and then return back to Kalkatiyadhaar campsite .
Day 5
Trek from Kalkatiyadhaar to Chilurgad.(7kms,4-5Hrs)
  • After breakfast, we will return back to Chilurgad via Osla. It is 7kms and will take around 4-5 hrs to reach at the campsite.
Day 6
Trek from Chilurgad-Taluka- Drive from Taluka-Sankri..(12kms,4-5 hrs)
  • After breakfast, head back towards Taluka where the taxi will be waiting and drive back to Sankri.
Day 7
Drive to Dehradun.
  • Drive back to Dehradun.

GET YOURSELF FIT

As we gain higher altitude, the air becomes thinner. To overcome this we need to develop our aerobic fitness. The more fitter you are, you will enjoy more during the trek.


Difficulty- Easy- Moderate.

1) For cardiovascular endurance, begin jogging atleast 1 month before the trek.
2) For strength do squats, push ups.

Fitness Bechmark: Jog/Run for 3 Kms in 30 mins.
Remember always start your training program with stretching and warm up exercises.

HOW TO REACH.
The base camp of kedarkantha trek is Sankri. The distance between sankri to Dehradun
is 190kms. There are public buses and shared jeeps running between Dehradun and
Sankri. Dehradun is easily accessible through road, rail, and air transport.

 

By Road
Dehradun is well connected with comfortable Volvo buses run by government and
private operators. You can catch luxury and normal buses to Dehradun which are
available from ISBT Kashmiri Gate and Anand Vihar.Also, you can hire a cab from
Dehradun to Sankri at the cost of Rs 5,500.

 

By Rail:
Nearest railway station to sankri is Dehradun. Dehradun is well connected by railway
network with major destinations of India. There are many trains which runs between
New Delhi and Dehradun. Some of them are DEHRADUN SHTBDI, DEHRADUN
EXPRESS, NANDA DEVI EXPRESS, UJJAINI EXPRESS, MUSSOORIE EXPRESS,
UTTARANCHAL EXPRESS.

 

By Flight:
The nearest airport to Sankri is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun.
