Hampta pass trek connect Kullu valley with Lahaul valley at an altitude of 14,100 feet.It is one of the delightful trek in Manali region of Himachal Pradesh. Hampta Pass Trek is a moderate trek with landscape variations from thick forest, lush green grass to barren landscape of Lahaul. Visit to Chandratal lake will be like cherry on the cake. It is considered as a moderate trek and is suitable for beginners as well as experienced trekkers. Each of the campsites on this trek are very pretty.


This trek has a lot of variation in the trails which makes this trekking expedition exciting.


Destinations Covered during Hampta Pass Trek:

Manali, Prini, Hampta Pass, Chandra Tal.


The total distance of this trek is 35 kms covered over 4 days of trekking.

Day 1
Arrival at Manali(6,700 ft) - Same day drive to Jobra(9,700 ft)- Trek to Chika.(10,100 ft)
  • Arrival at manali and we will gather at Manali bus stand and then we will drive to Jobra(45mins- 1 hr). After Briefing session by our experienced trek leaders, we will start the trek to Chika. Our first campsite will be atChika(10,100 ft). Today’s trek passesthrough pine and maple forests,green meadows with small bridge crossing. Total time to trek to Chika campsite will be around 2hrs.
Day 2
Trek from Chika to BaluKaGera(11,900 ft) (4-5 hrs trek).
  • Today’s trek is an easy ascent and will take around 4-5 hrs.The best part of today’s trek that we have to cross two rivers one at the start just near to Chika Campsite and other at JwaraNala.The trail stays along the banks of the river for most part of the day. The initial climb involves a lot of boulder hopping. Overnight stay in Baluka Gera.
Day 3
Trek from Balukagera to Shea Goru(11,900 ft)via Hampta pass(14,100 ft).
  • Today’s trek can be broken into two stages – the climb to Hampta Pass which is moderately steep followed by a steep descent to Shea Goru. The climb is strenuous all the way uptoHampta pass. Walk at steady pace with few breaks. The pass is not easily identifiable so ask your guide about it. As you cross the pass you enter the Lahaul region & change in the scenery is very contrasting.From Hampta Pass you can see the Indrasan Peak and its gigantic glacier.Total time to reach Shea goru will be around 8hrs. Trekking in Hampta pass just drives you crazy as it is one of the most fabulous experiences you can have.
Day 4
Trek from Shea Goru to Chattru(11,100 ft).Drive to Chandratal lake(14,100 ft) and back to Chatru.
  • Trek begins with the crossing of river which is flowing by the campsite.This day we have an easy descent through the Hampta Valley and will reach Chatru. Chatru is a beautiful spot with lovely mountain views. After lunch, we will head towards Chandratal lake which is at 14,100 ft and is also known as “Moon lake”. It is a 3hrs drive.After visiting chandratal lake, we will drive back to Chattru. Overnight saty in chatru.
Day 5
Drive to Manali via Rohtangpass(13,000 ft).
  • After breakfast, we will depart from Chatru to Manali via Rohtang pass.

How to get yourself fit for the trek
As we gain higher altitude, the air becomes thinner. To overcome this we need to develop our aerobic fitness. The more fitter you are, you will enjoy more during the trek. Hampta pass is a moderate trek, so proper fitness is required for this trek is recommended
Difficulty Level- MODERATE
1: For cardiovascular endurance, begin jogging atleast 1 month before the trek.
2: For strength do squats, push ups. Fitness Bechmark: Jog/Run for 5 Kms in 30 mins.
Remember always start your training program with stretching and warm up exercises.



Basic necessities:
1) Good quality trekking shoes(preferably high ankle).
2) Rucksack(40-60 litres).
3) Rain cover.

4) 2 water bottles.
5)Torch with spare batteries.
6) A trekking pole.
7) Glucose, Chocolates, biscuits and nuts
8)  Original ID card.
9)  Personal medical kit(if required).
